LKS2 - Kingfisher Class, Owl Class, Kestrel Class and Woodpecker Class
During their time in Lower Key Stage 2 (Year 3 and Year 4), pupils are taught the core subjects of English and Maths on a daily basis. English consists of separate sessions for the skills of reading, writing, spelling and handwriting. Maths provision includes daily learning of times tables, in preparation for the Multiplication Tables Check (MTC) statutory assessment, towards the end of Year 4.
Science, PSHE, RE and PE are taught weekly, whilst the remaining foundation subjects are taught on rotation across a 3-week period. The curriculum is designed to capitalise on opportunities for cross-curricular learning, where appropriate. Further learning opportunities are encouraged through home learning (spelling and maths, weekly), educational visits (e.g. Colchester Castle, West Stow Anglo-Saxon Village) and links with the local community.
Pupils in Year 4 also benefit from music lessons taught by specialist music teachers provided by the Suffolk County Music Service. This year, the children are learning cello or violin.
Pupils participate in swimming lessons as part of the PE curriculum, in both Year 3 and Year 4.
Towards the end of LKS2 all children are invited to participate in a residential visit. Over the three days each child is encouraged to take part in a variety of activities such as kayaking, climbing and bush-craft, as well as fostering self-help skills, developing resilience and challenging their personal boundaries.
